The Native Americans

This is a typical headdress worn by a Native American chief. The side part almost looks like earings or even a dreamcatcher!
I think with these the bigger the better! Mainly makes me think of Pocohontas, embarrassing but true.

The headress was very important to the Native Americans and whoever wore it got the upmost respect, it usually shows bravery, and a feather was gained on each brave act and when there was enough it would be made into a headdress, the golden eagle feather was the most significant of them all.
It can be a range of different colours or all the same generally depending on which area the tribe lived.

Each Native American tribe had different designs and patterns painted onto their face, they all used natural products as they appriciated nature such as clay, mud and plants. Each colour they wore meant something, Black symbolised living, red for danger and war, white for peace and they believed green under the eyes would give night wision.

This is a picture of Karlie Kloss a Victoria Secret model who wore a headdress down to the floor during their annual show. Victoria secret were said to have appologised as the outfit was criticised as a display of ignorance towards tribal culture and history.

Tribal Inspired Music Videos

Kelis - Acapella

This video is so good for current tribal interpretations, the headress she wears at the beginning looks incredible with the long feathers coming out the top, it has made me want to research into the native americans! I also really like the jewels around her eyes at the beginning looks beautiful. This is a really good video to study while trying out different ideas for a modern take on the tribes.

Beyonce - Run The World

Tribal references in this video only really apply at the beginning with her accessories and headpiece, she looks so regal while wearing it.

Kanye West - Love Lockdown

Throughout the video it looks as if they are all different trribes, at first I thought they looked similar to the skeleton tribe. All the male ones look like warriors.

Rodarte Spring 2010

Laura Mulleavy and sister Kate did the Rodarte show inspired by Death Valley and Vultures, Go Goth Tribal Warrior. Dry ice smoke filled the room while the models walked across a crunchy black sand.

I love how all the arms are painted! Its such a good effect for the show along with all the models having different designs up their arms it really inspired me to have a go at it myself.
Each model had their arms in tribal tattoos, dark lips and their hair wrapped up into a webbed wool. Their cheeks were contoured but no blush the eyes also are left bare with only a darker eye shadow.

Heres some designs i did from drawing onto a magazine, my friend even looked through and said oohh I love her tights!

Tattoos

Here are just a few photos I found on modern day tribal tattoos, they tend to look like this one above going along the shoulder blade, others like the one shown below have lots of detail in them and are similar to the Maori tribe.

This last photo made me want to look more into tribal fashion tattoos!

Maori Tribe

The Maori tribe is the largest social unit within the Maori society. It has been said that the first Maori came to  New Zealand in 12 different canoes carrying 12 different tribes.
The facial tattoo was considered a mark of adulthood and achievement, they were usually marked from forehead to throat. They would use a bone chisel which was scalpel-sharp to cut and engrave the face, creating a raised pattern.

No facial tattoos were ever alike, womens tattoos were never as extreme and usually darker around their lips and nostrils and more commonly the design going down the chin.
I think these designs are amazing and these people are brave for going through that pain it makes me queasy just thinking about it!

People forget where ideas for tattoos come from nowadays but from looking at most they all have influences of tribal in them.

Seeing the pictures of this tribe reminded me of one thing- Mike Tyson, maybe he isn't as extreme as the Maori tribe but still is very similar, this could also show achievement from his success from fighting which also relates back to the warriors getting them.

I think the tattoos on the face look brilliant and I would definitely like to include something like this into my final shoot.

Day Of The Dead

Dia De Los Muertos or Day Of The Dead is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated particularly in Mexico but also in other cultures around the world, where family and friends gather to pray and remember other family members or friends that have died. They honour the dead by decorating altars with sugar skulls and marigolds and painting the faces.

I decided to look at this celebration as it tied in with my previous research on 'The Skeleton Tribe'.

These are a couple of pictures I found and liked of day of the dead make up, I like how some of the designs can be pretty and others can just generally be terrifying. I think the second one looks so good with the bones painted onto the arms.

This is a picture of Lady GaGa from her video Born This Way, the make up looks amazing and i love her hair in the video with the long ponytail in pink, I also think how they have painted a brain like design on the mans head looks really good but also gruesome!
Here is the music video to born this way.

Alexander Mcqueen Fall 2000-2001

These are pictures from Alexander Mcqueen's Fall/Winter show in Paris. I really love the hair and how it brings all the models together with the Gold and Yellow paint going down their parting and onto their face I also think he has captured the tribal theme into the hair as its all matted at the bottom and not perfectly neat.

This particular design really interested me, because of the mouth piece she is wearing, It can't have been comfortable! It made me want to look into tribal piercings and stretching of the skin. The big earings are obviously quite a main piece in the look that has been created and also reminds me of what some of the woman used to wear round their necks to make them longer. In regards to her outfit I love it! especially the big shoulders.

Like what I was just talking about with the neck stretchers I found this photo from the collection where they have taken the tribal look and over exaggerated it with their necklace. I would really like to incorporate the amazing hair that has been created into my final look.

This head dress I thought looked really scary and looks like it could be heavy for the model wearing it, not to mention how she walked across that floor!! The setting that has been used for this show looks brilliant and so different to other catwalks.

Here is a video I found of the catwalk.
